Leading Wimbledon and Kingston estate agent, Quinton Scott is currently marketing a unique property that enjoys an unlikely link to some of the most dramatic events of World War II. The home, being developed by specialist bespoke developer, Peninsula, is located on the site of the former Telegraph Cottage on Coombe Hill. Telegraph Cottage was where General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of allied forces in Europe, masterminded much of the preparation for what was officially codenamed Operation Overlord, otherwise known as D-Day. General Eisenhower, who went on to serve two terms as US President, lived in Telegraph Cottage from 1942 to 1945 and used the peaceful atmosphere of the cottage to work on many oF the massive problems involved in organising what was the world’s largest ever invasion.
According to a June Sampson article in the Surrey Comet, Field Marshall Montgomery and other British service chiefs were regular visitors to the Cottage and General Eisenhower even set up a D-Day operations room in one of the garden sheds. Eisenhower loved the location so much that he drew up plans to buy the house following the conclusion of the war but this failed to materialise as he instead threw himself into his new career as a statesman. Many years later, following his second term as President, Eisenhower returned to Coombe Hill to visit the house, which had played such a key role in the planning of Overlord and the winning of the war. Telegraph Cottage eventually fell into decline and was demolished in the 1980’s. It was replaced by a discreet gated development of four luxury homes, set in the 4.5 acres grounds.
As part of the prestigious Coombe Hill estate the property is located in one of London’s premier residential areas in close vicinity to Richmond Park, Wimbledon Common and Kingston-upon-Thames. The home will feature a steam room, gymnasium, cinema and games room, as well as eight stately bedrooms. The house will be surrounded by matures trees and enjoys 24/7 security as part of the gated Telegraph Cottage scheme. As the property is still in an early stage of construction any purchaser will be able to work with Peninsula to complete and specify the property to their own requirements. The home will be priced at around £5.8 million. For more information please contact Quinton Scott on 020 8939 8181. |
